Sample Orientation Notebook

Host contractors may wish to create an orientation notebook for the surety underwriter intern prior to the intern's arrival at the contractor's office. The orientation manual may address many items including key contact persons, area hotel and transportation information, and local restaurants. An example of the table of contents for an orientation notebook is provided below for the host contractor's convenience.

Sample Table of Contents for Orientation Notebook

  • Introduction to Construction Company X
    (Includes history, mission statement/vision, list of construction services, types of projects by industry (i.e. automotive, building manufacturing, energy/industrial), safety, quality management, description of equipment, facilities, awards received)
     
  • Contacts at Construction Company X
    (Name, title, areas of responsibilities, mailing address, direct-dial phone no., cell no., and e-mail address)
     
  • Biographies of Employees on Staff of Construction Company X
    (brief bios with whom the intern will meet with picture of staff members of Senior Management, Operations, Estimating, Business Development, Legal, Financial Services, and Safety)
     
  • Organization of Construction Company X
    (Flow charts of Subsidiaries and of Employees on Staff of Construction Company X)
     
  • Surety Intern’s Schedule During Visit with Construction Company X
    (one or two weeks)
     
  • Planned Job Site Visits with Addresses
    (description of each job site with picture and directions to the site from main office and directions from the site back to main office)
     
  • Surety Intern Checklist and Notes
     
  • Local hotel Information
    (where intern is staying during internship)
     
  • Local airport Information
     
  • Other information
     
  • Notes about internship experience
    (place for notes about internship experience that can be referenced for writing a letter that should be submitted to suretyintern@nasbp.org.)
