Encryption Tools Can Help Protect Confidential Information Sent Via
E-mail

Contained in the
NASBP Code of Ethics are
principles regarding the confidentiality of client and colleague
information that all NASBP members have agreed to strive to uphold. In
today’s business environment, it is prudent for firms to consider using
technology in an effort to preserve these confidences. An area in the
workplace that might be vulnerable to inadvertent disclosure or
misappropriation of information is e-mail. According to the NASBP
Automation and Technology Committee and the NASBP Ethics Committee,
tools are available that can help protect confidential information sent
via e-mail.
Consider implementing
an “encryption” tool in your firm that scrambles the contents of an
e-mail. Thanks to advances in technology, there are several commercially
available solutions that are as varied as the companies that use e-mail.
