New NASBP Member Referral Incentive
NASBP has implemented a new membership campaign in which a current Member, affiliate, or associate can receive a $100 credit towards their next NASBP meeting registration (the annual or a regional meeting) for each new bond producer Member that joins NASBP as a result of their referral. The referring firm must be indicated on the NASBP membership form. All referral credits must be used within 12 months. New NASBP New Bond Producer Member Incentive
NASBP has implemented a new program in which new bond producer Members receive a 50% discount on their NASBP Annual Meeting registration or a free registration to a NASBP Regional Meeting. Essential to NASBP’s government relations initiatives is forging a productive working relationship with government leaders and decision-makers. At the federal level, NASBP is actively involved with educating Members of Congress and their staff about the importance of the surety bond product. One way that is achieved is the NASBP Annual Legislative Fly-in Day. The Legislative Fly-in offers NASBP members, affiliates and associates an excellent opportunity to be proactive in support of the surety industry on Capitol Hill.
NASBP also offers an advocacy program for anyone who plans to visit Washington, D.C. The program, called “Every Day is Advocacy Day,” was created because your passion for advocating for your industry is year round. NASBP staff would be happy to accompany you on Capitol Hill to meet with your Members of Congress to discuss critical issues to the surety industry.
NASBP staff regularly meets with Congressional members and/or their staff to advocate for the protection of the Federal Miller Act, to create opportunities for small and emerging contractors so they may participate on federal procurement projects, and to seek support for many other initiatives NASBP has identified in the NASBP Government Relations Agenda.
If and when a state legislator proposes a piece of legislation that will affect the integrity of the bond product, NASBP, through its grassroots network of Members, is poised to meet the challenge by taking action to promote and defend suretyship. The NASBP Government Affairs Representatives serve as the local “eyes and ears” in all 50 states, tracking local and state legislative activities. When a threat emerges, NASBP broadcasts information and analysis so that its membership can take appropriate action and can educate legislators, public owners, and procurement officials on the value of the surety product and how it works. We appreciate the value of our product, but others may not. A contractor who cannot qualify may want the bond requirement to go away. Others may be persuaded that it is an unnecessary expenditure of public money. When it comes to keeping track of emerging trends and developments that may impact the surety product, the NASBP membership is placed “in the know” through NASBP information and web tools so they can become effective advocates. NASBP and its membership are valuable resources for other industry stakeholders—private owners, contractor and specialty contractor trade associations, legislators, and surety companies. NASBP’s professional development initiatives provide a wide variety of educational opportunities for surety professionals. Through classroom programs, telephone seminars, online courses, and informational publications, NASBP delivers accessible, industry-specific training and education to meet the needs of surety professionals.
The William J. Angell Surety School
The flagship education offering of NASBP, this school is the only program of its kind. Designed to train those new to the surety industry through the Level I School and more seasoned surety professionals through the Level II School, the program offers a solid educational foundation to surety professionals. Taught by both surety bond producers and underwriters, it offers expert and comprehensive training on the industry and on the surety credit decision-making process. This essential program qualifies for CE credit throughout the country.
NASBP’s Risk Workshop: Analyzing Risk and Understanding the Bid Process
The three-day NASBP Risk Workshop explores the potential risks involved in the construction contracting process. Through an interactive case study, participants learn about the bid process from a contractor’s perspective, such as the pressure of meeting deadlines to addressing a discovery of required missing information in the bid documents, to the cast of characters who participate in the process. The participants roll-up their sleeves, roll out the blueprints and enter the contractors’ world of confusing contract language, price escalations, cash flow, subcontractors, and unforeseen conditions. Surety professionals who have a good understanding of risk—and how to plan for and mitigate it—can become even more valuable consultants to their clients by participating in this workshop. This workshop has been approved for CE credit.
NASBP Sales Workshop
The highly customized NASBP Sales Workshop, facilitated by a Fortune 500 sales coach and top surety producers, is designed by and for surety bond producers. The curriculum introduces participants to a formal sales process that is tailored to the surety agency environment. Participants explore how different personal styles can be leveraged and learn to use tools and techniques to improve client relationships, expand circles of influence, and achieve improved production.
NASBP Virtual Seminars
The NASBP Virtual Seminars, delivered by facilitated conference call technology, address a wide array of topics of interest to surety professionals. Offered approximately every two weeks, each seminar is one hour in length and allow participants to ask questions directly to the presenters. Supporting documentation is provided for participant reference and to supplement the topic under discussion. Each seminar is presented by industry experts including surety professionals, attorneys, academics, and consultants.
NASBP Online Courses
NASBP has two online courses under development. The first is Commercial Surety Fundamentals, which will be available in 2010. The second is Risk Management Fundamentals that is scheduled to be available in 2011. NASBP continues to deliver new online offerings like these through new program development and new partnerships with other industry education providers.

Pipeline is a bi-monthly e-newsletter delivers guidance on current surety and construction industry issues that can affect your business, such as current legal developments and trends in project delivery, finance, accounting, risk management, employment, contract documents, automation and technology, and the U.S. Treasury List, as well as, what NASBP Members, affiliates, and associates are doing on behalf of the Association with regard to federal and state legislation and regulations, education, and meetings.
NASBP is ever vigilant on legislative matters. With Focal Point, NASBP's electronic bulletin, you’ll hear about important government relations matters and activities—bulleted summaries of key legislative and regulatory developments, reports on joint efforts of NASBP and members of its industry alliance, and other important initiatives to keep you “in the know.” When NASBP needs the membership to notify their members of Congress of an issue of import to the industry, NASBP provides a link to its Take Action Center. At the Take Action Center the membership can customize letters to their members of Congress that describe the issue.
Semi-Annual Dispatch and Year in Review - Annual Highlights
Focusing on government and industry relations, professional development programs, technology initiatives, and Member resources, NASBP's Semi-Annual Dispatch, NASBP's printed publication, reports on the efforts and accomplishments of NASBP volunteers and staff mid-year and the Year In Review-Highlights at the end of the year. These publications keep you informed on the returns on your investment in membership.
The NASBP Career Center
Your firm depends on attracting first-rate talent with a minimum expenditure of time and resources. The NASBP Career Center allows Members, affiliates, and associates (and nonmembers, for an additional fee) to reach qualified candidates including producers, brokers, account execs, underwriters, claims analysts, marketing and sales representatives, and certified public accountants, and more so you can locate the talent for continued success.
These time-sensitive reports are a key part of NASBP’s “grassroots” power. The Producer’s Tool Kit
The Producer's Tool Kit provides more than 12 forms your producers and agency need to expedite obtaining client information. Use these electronic, standardized templates—contractor questionnaires, bid bond request forms, performance and payment bond request forms, personal financial statements—to make productivity gains.
Designed with a goal of examining the current use of technology by NASBP Members, the results of the IT survey provide valuable information for NASBP Members to determine their technology needs in the coming year. As technology becomes a more important and integral part of the day-to-day activities of surety bond producers and their agencies, NASBP will continue to develop tools and resources for Members to assist them in addressing their automation and technology challenges.
IT Show and Tell
NASBP offers a compiled list of the latest information technology tools, applications, and services to help surety professionals save time and money. This list was created by the NASBP Automation and Technology Committee and breaks down four categories of technology: 1) Web Services, 2) Tools, 3) Portable Devices, and 4) Hardware and Software.
