NASBP Winter Surety School Outstanding Students Recognized

More than 100 students from across the nation, Canada, and Guam attended the William J. Angell Surety School held in January in Houston. There were 58 students in Level I and 60 students in Level II.

At every NASBP school, the students in each class identify the student who they consider to be the most outstanding pupil (MOP) to receive a memento signed by all the members of the class and faculty. Receiving the coveted football in Level I Red Team was Wyeth Shabel, Underwriter, AIG Surety, Berkeley Heights, NJ. The Level I Yellow Team chose Peggy Firth, AVP, Account Executive, Wells Fargo Insurance Services, Seattle, Washington. Level II Blue Team selected Corey Fayette, Underwriter, Zurich Surety, Metairie, Louisiana; and Level II Green Team selected Jason Sayers, Surety Account Manager, BB&T Construction Risk Services, Durham, North Carolina. Two  MOPs, Shabel and Sayers, were unable to stay for the the graduation dinner and missed being photographed with faculty.

As a small way of saying thank you for their hard work and dedication to NASBP, faculty members are given a crystal apple in recognition of every five years of service. This winter, two faculty members received service awards: Erle Benton for 15 years of service and Jim Lareau for 25 years of service. Congratulations and thank you for your many years of service to NASBP and the surety industry!

On Wednesday, the Level II students were treated to a luncheon with a panel of guest speakers:NASBP Immediate Past President Susan Hecker, who is Director of National Contract Surety of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co.; John Knox, Jr., who is founder and Chairman of the Board of NASBP Affiliate SureTec; NASBP President Lynne Cook, who is Senior Vice President of Early, Cassidy and Schilling, LLC.; and NASBP Past President Tom Padilla, who is Vice President of Surety of HUB International Insurance Services in Albuquerque, NM.
