Dan Wood Burton
October 6, 1955 – August 7, 2022

NASBP was saddened to learn about the passing of NASBP activist, Dan Wood Burton, 66, of NASBP member Lockton Companies, LLC of Houston, TX. Dan was an Executive Vice President, Producer with Lockton’s Surety Practice and a third-generation surety professional with over 40 years of experience in domestic and international commercial and contract surety.

Toby Miclette, Surety Bond Producer, Senior VP of NASBP member Bowen, Miclette & Britt Insurance Agency, LLC in Houston, TX, said, “Dan was a first-class surety agent and an even better person. He genuinely cared about his clients, co-workers, and countless others in our industry. He will be dearly missed.”

John Martinez, Senior Vice President, Surety of NASBP member American Global in Spring, TX, said, “Dan was a friend and mentor to many, including myself. When you think of the prototypical professional bond guy, Dan was it, as he certainly made an impact in my career, along with many others.”

Lawrence F. McMahon, AFSB, Executive Vice President, Surety Manager, Construction Services Group of NASBP member Alliant Insurance Services, Inc. in San Diego, said, “Dan was a great bond guy and lots of fun too. He was my ‘go-to’ guy with international and reverse flow surety questions. When the NASBP William J. Angell Surety School was in Houston, it was a yearly tradition for Tom Padilla, Bill King (SureTec and GCNA), and myself to get together with Dan and catch up.”

After Dan was born in Kansas City, Missouri, his family moved to the San Francisco Bay area. He graduated from Carlmont High School and went to college in Utah at Snow College and Utah State University pursuing a degree in Anthropology. After graduation from Utah State, Dan returned to San Francisco where he followed his father’s footsteps into the insurance industry and began his successful, 40-plus-year career in the surety industry.

Dan started his career with Fireman’s Fund writing surety bonds for the wine makers of Napa Valley. A growing demand for surety bonds in the energy industry brought Dan to Texas where he worked with several insurance firms, including AIG, AON, and Alliant. He was Vice President & Regional Surety Marketing Manager for AIG in Dallas. Later, he joined Energy Insurance International in Houston as Vice President, Producer & Surety Manager in 1992. When Energy Insurance was acquired by AON in 1994, he became Senior Vice President & Global Natural Resource Surety Leader. From 2003 to 2022, Dan worked for Alliant Insurance Services, Inc. in Houston as Executive Vice President, Surety for its Energy & Marine Group. Dan had recently been recruited as Executive Vice President of Lockton’s Surety Practice in Houston.

Dan is preceded in death by his father, Delmar Lee Burton, in 2021; his mother, Glenna Lou Branstetter Burton, in 2006; and his sister, Deborah Lee Burton, in 2018.
