NASBP Visibility with Members of Congress Increased with New NASBP Position Briefs and Members’ Correspondence
Since December, NASBP members and staff have amped-up NASBP’s visibility with members of Congress. NASBP staff visited over a dozen Congressional Offices armed with new NASBP Government Relations Position Briefs to educate members of Congress on the importance of surety bonds for public construction projects.NASBP members also were heavily engaged. When NASBP asked members in the January 16 edition of Focal Point and the December 2008 edition of Pipeline to send “Take Action Now” letters to their members of Congress (both Senate and House), members rose to the occasion and sent numerous letters to various Congressional offices, asking them to support the economic stimulus package and reminding them not to waive surety bond requirements.

NASBP staff and members have distributed the NASBP Government Relations Position Briefs to educate Congressional leaders about surety bonding. Three new briefs have been posted on-line.

Support FAR reforms for transparency of contracting officer decisions to waive Miller Act bond requirements. (2 pages)

Support FAR reforms on sections addressing the acceptability of bonds issued by individual sureties. (2 pages)

Support reinvigorating the U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Surety Bond Guarantee Program. (2 pages)

Members’ willingness to get involved by reaching out to their elected officials is critical to maintaining the interests of the surety industry. Please make sure that your elected representatives receive your thoughts and comments the next time you see an NASBP request to “Take Action Now.”
