NASBP September Regional Meetings Record Highest Attendance in Five Years
Two NASBP Regional Meetings were held this September. Attendance at the Regions 4, 5, 6 & 7 Annual Meeting was the highest it has been in the last five years. The meeting, held in downtown Chicago and hosted by Region 6 Director Toby Miclette, included a panel session on assaults on the surety product with panelists Richard Minick, Erle Benton, and Mark McCallum. Attendees also heard a keynote session titled, “The Gift of GAB: The Secret to Maintaining Client Relationships through Good Times and Not So Good Times,” delivered by Conor Cunneen, who described how to break bad news in a positive way. Producer members had the opportunity to earn continuing education (CE) credit by attending the session, titled “Managing Subcontractor Risks – A Guide for Surety Professionals,” presented by Steve Dorenkamp and Scott Bailey of Merchants Bonding. Paul Ranalli of Zurich Surety delivered a breakout session, titled “Bonding a P3,” that discussed the pros and cons of the federal and state governments using public-private partnerships to address their infrastructure needs. Attendees cheered on the Chicago Cubs from one of the famous Rooftop Clubs at Wrigley Field and participated in a golf event.
September wrapped up with the Regions 1, 2 & 3 Annual Meeting in Seattle, WA, which also had its highest registration in the last five years. The meeting, hosted by Region 1 Director Stuart O’Farrell, provided best-selling author Mark Matteson as the Keynote, who gave recommendations on how surety professionals can be more efficient with their time. Other program topics included a panel presentation on alternate contract delivery systems presented by Robert Kjome of Roebbelen Contracting and Paul Ranalli of Zurich Surety NA, who discussed the challenges and opportunities that 3Ps, lease/leasebacks and CM/GCs and other arrangements present to the surety industry. In addition, attendees heard a session from Hanson Hussein who described how to market yourself with social media. The meeting concluded with the CE session, “Managing Subcontractor Risks – A Guide for Surety Professionals,” presented by Mike Safris and William Warner of Merchants Bonding.
