Stability Through Purpose – Guiding NASBP Into Its 85th Year

donatelli logo stability through purpose

As President of NASBP, I am mindful of the legacy of leadership that has shaped this association since 1942. Each incoming president selects a theme to guide the year ahead—one reflecting both industry needs and organizational values. I have chosen Stability Through Purpose as the theme for 2026–2027.

This theme is rooted in NASBP’s long‑standing mission: to strengthen professionalism, expertise, and innovation in surety and to advocate its use worldwide. It reflects the conviction that stability is not achieved by chance. It is the product of purposeful action, innovation, informed leadership, and an unwavering commitment to a sustained purpose. NASBP’s strength lies in remaining grounded in its core mission while adapting to an evolving marketplace to support our entire surety industry.

Education: Ensuring a Strong Talent Pipeline

Education remains a critical contribution to our industry. The Professional Development Committee continues to refine its offerings, including the NASBP Surety Schools, virtual seminars, podcasts, and on-demand learning resources. We will continue to expand these programs to support producers, underwriters, and partners at every career stage.

A key focus this year is advancing the Make Surety a Career initiative. By integrating surety education into college curricula and connecting students with internships and careers, we are strengthening our talent pipeline and promoting surety as a rewarding profession.

Leadership Development: Investing in the Profession

My own career trajectory illustrates NASBP’s impact on emerging leaders. Committee involvement, strong mentorship, and exposure to executives accelerated my professional growth. Actively participating in and chairing several association committees provided foundational leadership skills, strategic insights, and operational experience.

The 5-15 Leadership Committee played an especially pivotal role, offering early access to senior leaders, building peer networks, and deepening my market understanding. Today, I am honored to serve as the very first 5-15 Committee graduate to become NASBP President. This milestone underscores our commitment to cultivating the next generation of industry professionals.

We will continue to expand development and networking opportunities to create availability and connection for all members. This means thinking differently about what our members need at all levels. It also demands we meet our members where they are to facilitate connection and networking even when being in person is not an option.

Advocacy: Protecting the Integrity of Surety

Advocacy remains a defining pillar driven by our collective strength. While our annual Federal Legislative Fly-in draws over 130 participants to Washington, D.C., our impact must extend beyond the nation’s capital. True advocacy occurs daily at state and local levels where regulatory decisions can shift overnight.

Strengthening local, grassroots advocacy is a primary focus I am passionate about. Because our industry’s foundation rests upon government legislation, proactive education is an absolute imperative. NASBP supports these initiatives, but nothing is as powerful as an individual member contacting a public official where they live and work. You are a voter, a taxpayer, and your voice carries unmatched influence.

We will focus on empowering members with the tools and confidence required to educate local politicians on the true value of surety bonds in protecting local businesses and public dollars. By ensuring officials view a local NASBP constituent as a trusted resource, we prevent uninformed decisions and stand ready to defend the surety product in our own backyards.

Looking Ahead: Purpose as a Strategic Imperative

As NASBP enters its 85th year, Stability Through Purpose serves as both a reflection of our history and a strategic imperative for the future. It calls us to remain grounded in our mission while actively engaging in the work that strengthens our broader surety community.

In the year ahead, I am committed to advancing the pillars that define NASBP—education, leadership development, and advocacy. It is a privilege to serve this association, and I look forward to working alongside our Members, Affiliates, Associates, and partners to advance our industry and this incredible association.
