The winter session of the William J. Angell Surety School will be held the last week of January in Houston, Texas. This always popular offering of the school will include both Level I (Jan. 22 to 25) and Level II (Jan. 22 to 27) classes. The school, which is the industry standard for training and developing both producers and underwriters is taught by leading practitioners from surety agencies and surety companies.
The faculty of the school has a combined tenure teaching there of 169 years! At the upcoming winter school NASBP will recognize the outstanding contributions of six faculty members who reached a milestone anniversary teaching with the school during 2011 and 2012. If you have attended the school in the past, it is likely that you have been instructed by one of these dedicated individuals. They are Paul Amstutz (5 years), Erle Benton (10 years), David Castillo (10 years), Ed Heine (10 years), Larry McMahon (10 years), Jim Lareau (20 years), and Ralph Pulver (20 years). We will feature profiles on these instructors in a future issue of Pipeline.
As an industry we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to these and the other instructors of the school for giving back so generously to their industry by instructing thousands of surety professionals throughout the years.

New Online NASBP Course Being Developed — NASBP Contract Surety Fundamentals
The Professional Development Committee is sponsoring the development of a new NASBP online course that will provide an introduction to contract surety. Similar in length and format to the popular NASBP Commercial Surety Fundamentals, the new course will be entitled NASBP Contract Surety Fundamentals. It is anticipated that the new course will be approximately 10 hours in length and will be certified for continuing education credit in all states.
The course will provide an overview of the construction industry, evaluating contractors – including an introduction to financial statement analysis, bond forms, underwriting considerations, and the role of the professional surety bond producers. This course, along with the commercial surety online course, will provide those new to the industry with a comprehensive orientation to the surety industry and should be a part of every new hire’s development plan. The course is scheduled to be available for CE credit in the first quarter of 2012.
Other NASBP courses offering CE in 2012 will include the online, CE Course – Commercial Surety Fundamentals that is available now, the CE Sessions on Managing Subcontractor Risk that will be offered at the 2012 Annual Meeting and the 2012 Regional Meetings, the Construction Contracts and Bond Forms Workshop, and the Winter and Summer Sessions of the William J. Angell Surety School.
